Cummins Area School

Curriculum

The school offers a comprehensive educational programme from Preschool to Year 12 in line with DECD policies and guidelines. There are strong transition programmes between Pre-school and Reception, Year 7 and Year 8.

Years 11 & 12

In the past many students from Cummins Area School have continued with study at a tertiary level, however an increasing number of students are opting for vocational pathways. Selection of Year 11 & 12 subjects largely depends upon the specific career pathway a student intends to pursue.

All this points to the need for students to develop a clear idea about their career intentions as early as possible. Where students are uncertain of a career path every effort will be made to select a course of study that will keep their tertiary study options open and be relative to their ability.

In Year 12, students apply for tertiary courses through SATAC (The South Australia Tertiary Admissions Centre) and their success in gaining the course of their choice will depend almost entirely on how high their Year 12 scores are. SATAC handles admissions into Adelaide University, Flinders University and the University of South Australia, as well as Diploma and Associate Diploma courses with TAFE.

Curriculum Overview – Secondary

The school operates a time-table which permits students to study up to 7 subjects in any semester. Each subject is taught for 5 lessons a week (two double lessons and one single lesson).
