Students that undertake a full year of Agriculture Studies are involved with Cattle Husbandry, culminating in taking the steers to Adelaide for judging at the Royal Adelaide Show.
The cost for this trip is minimal as students are expected to make their own travel arrangements to and from Adelaide - as well as organise their own accommodation (relatives / friends).
Students wishing to take part in the Led Steer must agree to a work contract that requires them to spend out of lesson time and possibly some weekend time feeding/attending to the steers.
SKIING AT MOUNT BULLER - July school holidays 2015 would possibly be the next proposed trip.
COST: In 2013 the trip cost approx. $1,300.00, which included travel, accommodation, all meals, ski hire, clothing hire, ski lessons and ski lift passes.
This cost would be a "ball-park" figure to start budgeting with - perhaps the trip becomes a Christmas present, or students work towards the cost?
The specific purpose of the trip is to broaden student awareness of the types of employment available to them as they think about their future career pathways (remembering that we are told that students today will have an average of 7-10 jobs in their life-time). Additional benefits are survival and organisational skills required to move about the city area during the week.
We begin the program of visits on the Monday and complete our visits on the Thursday, allowing Friday to return home. Some students will obviously take advantage of being in Adelaide and choose a work placement in the city prior to this trip.
The trip to Adelaide offers a breadth of vocations and direct access to vocational guidance services like the Career Reference Centre, the Armed Forces and Student Information Services at University and TAFE Campuses.
To reduce costs and give students a chance to develop their own organisational skills, they need to arrange their own ways of getting to and from Adelaide, bearing in mind we encourage students travel in cars where possible to cut costs. This may include air travel, bus travel or by car either with family or sharing travel with another student and their family with the expectation of paying $25.00 for a one-way car trip.
Parents are encouraged to be with their student on this trip. The visits provide a tremendous opportunity for insight into the types of careers available. Parents can then also be more informed in discussions they have with their child(ren) on future options. In some cases it is also helpful to see the career pathway that may not suitable. Also the parents, by being present, may be able to provide a slightly different perspective on a particular occupation that the student may not be able to do by themselves.
Accommodation in Adelaide will be in the Youth Hostel in Waymouth Street
- Students and parents are encouraged to stay as part of a group. Last year we stayed at the Youth Hostel in Waymouth Street. Both parents and students really enjoyed this accommodation. It was clean, neat, safe, and very convenient. The cost was around $25 per night, which we believe is very reasonable considering the locality. If students and parents have someone to stay with in Adelaide they can organise this on a personal basis, but they will be expected to join the group at the beginning of each day. It obviously is better if the students can all stay together.
- The accommodation is safe, secure and spacious. We have access to a large kitchen, huge lounge area, TV room, and video room. All that is needed are personal needs and food (for snacks and breakfast). You are encouraged to visit the web-site http://www.yha.com.au/. Everyone can cook their own meals.
- A submission for CAP funding is available to assist meeting a proportion of travel/accommodation costs for students. $25.00 if travelling in a car, $50.00 by bus or plane. This can only be claimed upon your return. Therefore you must keep copies of bus or plane tickets.
- The overall cost is estimated to be $205. This covers four nights accommodation and any expenses related to our visits (eg. Zoo, or Finesse Modelling). It is up to students to try and budget their other expenses (eg. food & travel), and we will spend time in class on this prior to the trip.
PLEASE NOTE If a student is not going to be accompanied by a parent, it is easier for the supervising teachers and students when they need to move between visits if that student stays with the main group.
An annual camp for Yr 7 students is held at Coffin Bay. This is an aquatic camp and includes the transition students from other feeder schools, eg Lake Wangary who will be attending CAS as Yr 8s the following year.
In the Primary, students may be involved in excursions within the local region, particularly in relation to the curriculum being studied. The Yr 3-6 students may also be involved in short term camps (1-3 days). During term 4 the year 5 students have the ERRAPPA camp at Iron Knob.
